Maine teen pregnancy rates continue to decline

Teen pregnancy and substance abuse by youths are on the decline in Maine, says an assessment of children's health status released February 24, 2004.

The 2004 Kids Count Data Book reports a 45% decline in the rate of teen pregnancies since 1990, along with declines in other sexual risk behavior and substance abuse among Maine youths.

The annual report issued by the nonprofit Maine Children's Alliance also says the rate of uninsured children has held steady at 7 percent, due in part to increasing enrollments in the state's Medicaid program, MaineCare.
