Simple measures help ensure more accurate Pap test results

Some simple measures can help women obtain more accurate results from their annual Pap tests.

"Although some people believe that having a Pap test right after your period is the best time for an exam, it is untrue," says Mack Barnes, MD, a gynecologic oncologist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. "You should try to make an appointment between days 10 and 20 of your menstrual cycle. This is the ideal time to evaluate the cervix and uterus cells under a microscope, ensuring the most accurate results possible.

Barnes also notes that when scheduling a Pap test, it is best to avoid sexual intercourse for at least 24 hours before your exam.
