No evidence found for special benefits of low-carbohydrate diets

by Maria G. Essig, MS, ELS, senior medical writer - The evidence concerning the benefit of low-carbohydrate diets is inconclusive, say researchers who analyzed the existing data, and recommendations against or for the diets cannot be made.

"Low-carbohydrate diets have been popularized without detailed evidence of their efficacy or safety," said Dawn M. Bravata and colleagues at Stanford University and Yale University. "The literature has no clear consensus as to what amount of carbohydrates per day constitutes a low-carbohydrate diet."
