According to a study from Germany, "Accelerated progression of atherosclerosis in coronary, carotid, cerebral, and peripheral arteries is a phenomenon observed in diabetes mellitus. Pathophysiologic mechanisms are slowly being understood. Pro-atherogenic adhesion molecules and inflammatory cytokines are involved in this process."
