Adults exposed to diabetes as a fetus face increased risk of type 2 diabetes

by Maria G. Essig, MS, ELS, senior medical writer - A fetus exposed to a diabetic environment faces an increased risk of having insulin-related metabolic abnormalities as an adult, according to a report published in the journal Lancet.

"Type 2 diabetes is affected by genetics and environmental factors," said Eugene Sobngwi and collaborators at the University of Paris VII and INSERM U561 in France. "We aimed to assess the effect of an in-utero diabetic environment independently of the genetic background for type 2 diabetes."
