Poor health affects businesses' bottom line

Chronic conditions like obesity and asthma cost U.S. businesses billions of dollars in health insurance costs and lost productivity, according to a report released September 16, 2003, by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

In 1994, obesity-related problems cost businesses an estimated $13 billion, and diabetes contributed to more than 14 million disability days nationwide, the study concludes. Cardiovascular disease, asthma, and tobacco use are among the other conditions that have a significant effect on businesses' bottom line.
