Increase in Canadian cesarean rates tied to changes in maternal characteristics

The increasing primary (first-time) cesarean delivery rate in Nova Scotia, Canada, is closely related to changes in the overall health characteristics of pregnant women there, according to a study in the October 2003 issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

More of today's Canadian women have high-risk characteristics than did women who delivered in previous decades. Characteristics include a higher age at first birth, a higher pre-pregnancy weight, and an increased weight gain during pregnancy - all associated with higher rates of complications.
