Metformin hydrochloride extended-release tablets now available

Par Pharmaceutical, Inc., will commence shipment of substitutable generic metformin hydrochloride (HCl) extended-release 500 mg tablets supplied and licensed from Bristol-Myers Squibb.

Release of the product will occur simultaneous with the release of metformin HCl by another generic company. Metformin HCl extended release is the generic version of Bristol-Myers Squibb's Glucophage XR 500 mg tablets.

Glucophage XR is used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes and has annual U.S. sales of approximately $450 million.
