New marker linked with heart disease in women

A protein called serum amyloid alpha (SAA) has been linked with existing heart disease in women, and higher protein levels were associated with severe coronary artery disease, a new study shows.

Researchers compared the predictive value of SAA to that of C-reactive protein (CRP). They found that while high levels of either can predict a woman's risk for future heart attack, only SAA was linked to existing heart disease.
