Navajo Health officials hope conference will make impact on diabetes

Watch what you eat. Take care of your feet. And turn off the TV and go exercise.

Those were among the many messages Navajo health officials shared with hundreds of people from around the reservation who gathered March 30, 2004, for a 2-day conference dedicated to helping Navajos prevent and learn to live with diabetes.

More than one-sixth of the reservation's population is affected by the disease, which can cause problems with the heart, eyes, kidneys and feet if left unchecked. Nationally, more than 107,000 Indians and Alaska natives have diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association.
