Overweight children are at high risk for developing hyperinsulinemia.

According to a study from the United States, "Although not well documented in the literature, there is growing evidence that overweight children may develop hyperinsulinemia. Children (n=171) with a body mass index greater than the 85th percentile for age using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention growth charts for children were recruited through primary care physician offices for a lifestyle change intervention. Laboratory measurements were obtained.
