Excessive weight has a negative impact on knee replacement outcomes, study shows

Obese patients who undergo total knee replacement surgery are less likely to have successful outcomes than patients who are not obese, according to a study published in the August 2004 issue of The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery.

Knee replacement patients who are morbidly obese, the study found, have an even lower rate of success.

About 267,000 total knee replacements are performed in the United States each year. There is strong evidence linking excessive body weight to degenerative joint disease of the knee, so many of those replacements are performed on patients who are obese.
