MODY5 gene deletion in beta cells leads to defective insulin release

Selective deletion of the Hnf1 beta (MODY5) gene in beta cells leads to altered gene expression and defective insulin release.

According to a study from the United States, "Hepatocyte nuclear factor 1alpha (HNF1-alpha) and HNF1-beta (or vHNF1) are closely related transcription factors expressed in liver, kidney, gut, and pancreatic beta-cells. Many HNF1 target genes are involved in carbohydrate metabolism. Human mutations in HNF1-alpha or HNF1-beta lead to maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY3 and MODY5, respectively), and patients present with impaired glucose-stimulated insulin secretion.
