Kentucky lawmakers consider options for dealing with child obesity

As state health officials search for solutions to Kentucky's child obesity problems, state lawmakers are considering options that could include requiring pupils to take physical education classes.

Parents and others who participated in the Cabinet for Health and Family Service's obesity forums, which were held at nine locations throughout Kentucky, ranked mandatory gym classes as their No. 1 priority, said Wendy Carlin, coordinator for the state's Obesity and Chronic Disease Prevention Program.

"In all nine of the forums, the number one overwhelming response was to mandate physical education in the schools, K through 12, 30 minutes a day minimum,"...
