Medcenter One launching child obesity program

Medcenter One Health Systems is unveiling a program to combat childhood obesity.

The hospital planned to start its pilot of the yearlong Shapedown program with 10 area families participating. A pediatrician, dietitian, physical and recreational therapists and psychologists will work with parents and children ranging from ages 6 to 12 to help them change their eating and exercise habits.

"Weight problems with children and adolescents is a national concern," said Jim Cooper, Medcenter One's chief executive. "Instead of just talking about it, these folks are taking steps to do something positive about it."
