According to recently published research in the journal AIDS, "Lipodystrophy is accompanied by increased adipose tissue inflammatory activity. Together with mitochondrial toxicity of nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, this induces metabolic stress causing increased glucose uptake."
