HIV/AIDS-Related Lipodystrophy
F-18-fluorodeoxyglucose PET visualizes lipodystrophy in HIV-infected patients

According to recently published research in the journal AIDS, "Lipodystrophy is accompanied by increased adipose tissue inflammatory activity. Together with mitochondrial toxicity of nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, this induces metabolic stress causing increased glucose uptake."
"We hypothesized that this might be visualized by F-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography," wrote C.P. Bleeker-Rovers and colleagues.
