Researchers' findings advance diabetes pathogenesis research

Investigators in the United States and Japan have published new diabetes pathogenesis data. Study 1: The importance of the hexosamine biosynthesis pathway in insulin resistance and diabetes is reviewed. According to a recent review published in the American Journal of Physiology - Endocrinology and Metabolism, "The hexosamine biosynthesis pathway (HBP) is a relatively minor branch of glycolysis. Fructose 6-phosphate is converted to glucosamine 6-phosphate, catalyzed by the first and rate-limiting enzyme glutamine: fructose-6-phosphate amidotransferase (GFAT)." M.G.
