According to recent research published in the journal Arteriosclerosis Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, "Collateral artery development (arteriogenesis), a vital compensatory mechanism in patients with arterial obstructive disease, may be deregulated by vascular risk factors, eg, diabetes or hypercholesterolemia."
