Researchers at Columbia University, College of Physicians & Surgeons target obesity and diabetes prevention

Researchers detail in "Weight management for type 2 diabetes mellitus: global cardiovascular risk reduction," new data in obesity and diabetes. According to recent research published in the American Journal of Cardiology, "Most patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus are overweight or obese, and the relation between obesity, especially of the visceral compartment, and the risk for developing diabetes is well recognized. Excessive adipose tissue is associated with insulin resistance as well as the increased expression of proinflammatory cytokines and prothrombotic factors, all of which contribute to elevating the risk for coronary artery disease (CAD)."
