Research from University of Virginia yields new data on obesity and diabetes

"The effect of obesity on complications after resection for lung cancer is unknown. We hypothesized that obesity is associated with increased complications after anatomic resections for non-small cell lung cancer," researchers in the United States report. "A review of our prospective general thoracic database identified 499 consecutive anatomic resections for non-small cell lung cancer from November 2002 to May 2006. Body mass index (BMI) was used to group patients as nonobese ( BMI > 18.5 to < 30) and obese ( BMI >= 30). Patient characteristics and oncologic and operative variables were compared between groups.
