Data show Avastin plus chemotherapy improves survival in lung cancer patients

Genentech, Inc. (DNA) announced the publication of data from a pivotal Phase III clinical trial in the New England Journal of Medicine showing that Avastin (bevacizumab) in combination with paclitaxel and carboplatin chemotherapy significantly improved overall survival in patients with unresectable, locally advanced, recurrent or metastatic non-squamous, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Based on this study (E4599), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved Avastin as a first-line treatment in combination with paclitaxel and carboplatin chemotherapy for patients with this advanced form of lung cancer.
