Lowered Neutrophil Activity May Provide Pregnancy-Related Arthritis Relief

Decreased immune activity by neutrophils may explain why pregnant women experience a temporary remission of rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

I.P. Crocker and colleagues at the University of Nottingham in England undertook a "longitudinal investigation of neutrophil activity" in nine healthy pregnant women, nine pregnant patients with RA, 12 age-matched, non-pregnant RA patients, and 22 healthy subjects serving as controls.

They reported their findings in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases ("Neutrophil function in pregnancy and rheumatoid arthritis," Ann Rheum Dis, July 2000;59(7):555-564).
