Leflunomide Safe and Effective for Treatment

Leflunomide, a novel antirheumatic drug, shows promise for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), particularly in conjunction with other drugs, report physicians with the Denver Arthritis Clinic in Colorado.

"Leflunomide is a new disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) that inhibits lymphocyte proliferation by blocking dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH), the enzyme critical for the production of pyrimidine necessary for DNA synthesis," explained M.H. Schiff and colleagues ("Leflunomide: Efficacy and safety in clinical trials for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis," Drugs of Today, 2000;36(6):383-394).
