Researchers identify potential therapeutic target for brain disease

Researchers studying yeast cells have identified a metabolic enzyme as a potential therapeutic target for treating Huntington disease, a fatal inherited neurodegenerative disorder for which there is currently no effective treatment.

The group, whose results appear in the May 2005 issue of Nature Genetics, includes researchers from the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle and the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. The paper was published online in advance at the journal's web site, www.nature.com/ng/index.html.
