Federal District Court Denies Request to Issue Injunction Against Contribution Limits Applicable to 527 Groups That Make Independent Expenditures in Federal Campaigns

A federal district court in Washington D.C. today denied a preliminary injunction requested by a section 527 group seeking to invalidate contribution limits and reporting requirements that apply to federal political committees engaged in making independent expenditures to influence federal campaigns. The ruling, by district court Judge James Robertson, came in the case SpeechNow.org v. FEC. SpeechNow.org filed a lawsuit against the Federal Election Commission in February 2008, claiming the right to raise unlimited individual contributions to use for independent expenditures expressly advocating the election or defeat of federal candidates....
