Legislation would require New Jersey insurers to pay for birth control

Many women getting birth control at the Planned Parenthood in Shrewsbury, New Jersey, clinic don't have health insurance and pay what they can on a sliding scale. Some have insurance, but their plans won't pay for the birth control pill or other contraceptives.

"If they had to go to the drug store, they could not afford to continue that prescription and they can come here and get it at a reduced rate," said Phyllis Kinsler, president and CEO for Planned Parenthood of Central New Jersey.

Several pending bills in the state Legislature would require insurers who provide prescription drug benefits to pay for contraceptives as they would for antibiotics...
