Ankylosing Spondylitis

Remicade approved for spinal illness, new warning added to label

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved use of Remicade for treatment of the inflammatory spinal condition ankylosing spondylitis, the manufacturer announced December 20, 2004.

At the same time, Centocor, Inc., said it is adding a new label warning about possible liver damage from the pharmaceutical, which is also used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's disease. Centocor is a unit of Johnson & Johnson.

Ankylosing spondylitis is a progressive inflammatory condition that can result in fusion of the spine and damage to hips and other joints.
