Detroit leader vetoes anti-smoking measure

The Wayne County, Michigan, executive has vetoed an anti-smoking ordinance adopted by the county commission, saying it contains illegal provisions and is pre-empted by state law. A veto override effort is expected.

Robert Ficano said the state's largest county would be better served by lobbying state legislators to strengthen the Michigan Clean Indoor Air Act.

"Undoubtedly we all recognize the dangers which smoking poses for the residents of Wayne County, the state of Michigan and the United States," Ficano said.

The ordinance passed 11-1, and 10 of the 15 commissioners would be needed for an override.
