FDA approves Atacand for use with an ACE inhibitor to treat heart failure

AstraZeneca announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new use for its angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) Atacand (candesartan cilexetil) tablets for the treatment of heart failure (NYHA class II-IV) in patients with left ventricular systolic dysfunction (ejection fraction less than or equal to 40%) to reduce cardiovascular death and to reduce heart failure hospitalizations. Atacand also has an added effect on these outcomes when used with an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor.
