Maryland to require insurance coverage of HPV tests in cervical cancer screening

A new Maryland law requiring health insurers to cover human papillomavirus (HPV) testing as part of cervical cancer screening for all women age 30 and older was passed unanimously by both houses. The new legislation, introduced by State Sen. Gloria Lawlah (D-District 26) and co-sponsored by 30 other senators, stipulates that HPV testing be covered in accordance with American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists guidelines, and the legislation will go into effect October 1, 2005.
