Researchers describe findings in stroke studies

Stroke research advances have been reported from Sweden, the United States and Germany.

Study 1: Cerebral VEGF levels rise and fall after ischemic insult to rodent brains.

According to recent research published in the journal Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica, "focal cerebral ischemia induces up-regulation of angiogenic growth factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which may have both beneficial and harmful effects to the ischemic brain. Vascular endothelial growth factor is up-regulated in models of brain ischemia, but the underlying mechanisms in vivo remain unclear."
