Virus Latently Infects Mononuclear Cells, Not Liver Tissue

A variant of human herpesvirus 6 latently infected mononuclear cells, but not liver tissue, researchers reported.

T. Yoshikawa and colleagues performed a study to find whether human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) can cause latent infection of liver tissue ("Human Herpesvirus 6 Latently Infects Mononuclear Cells But Not Liver Tissue," Journal of Clinical Pathology, January 1999;52(1):65-67).

The researchers collected peripheral blood and liver tissue from 25 living related liver transplant recipients at the time of transplantation.
