Center offers hope for families coping with birth defect

More than 1000 times a year, expectant parents receive a stunning diagnosis: a lung anomaly is threatening the health of their unborn child.

A serious birth defect, a lung lesion can compromise fetal lung growth and cause heart failure. Today, with accurate diagnosis and treatment, the vast majority of babies with lung lesions can go on to lead healthy lives.

But despite excellent outcomes, the defect is rare and successful treatment options are not widely understood in the medical community. Many parents are still being counseled to terminate the pregnancy when the lesion is discovered.
