Ophthalmic Contact Dermatitis



Sodium lauryl sulfate can improve patch test sensitivity

The anionic surfactant irritant sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) can be used to improve patch test sensitivity in patients with possible ophthalmic contact dermatitis.

"In patients suspected of allergic contact dermatitis because of topical ophthalmic medicaments, patch tests performed with patients' own products are often negative," dermatologists in Italy explained.

SLS "may alter the stratum corneum and increase antigen penetration," noted M. Corazza and colleagues at the University of Ferrara.
