HIV Risk High, Infection Rate Low in Marginalized Populations

Ironically, social isolation may protect marginalized populations from HIV infection.

The finding comes from a targeted-sampling study of people in Colorado Springs, Colorado, who are homeless, chemically dependent but not in treatment, or mentally ill.

Data collected by a two-nurse team revealed a high level of high-risk behavior but found only two new cases - and confirmed only one previously identified case - of HIV infection among the 224 study participants.
