AIDS Deaths Increase in Zimbabwe; Incidence Worldwide Increases 18 Percent

Deaths due to AIDS have increased from 300 to 500 people per week in Zimbabwe.

Some 10 percent of Zimbabwe's 11.5 million people are estimated to be living with HIV, the virus causing AIDS, reported a July 2, 1997 Panafrican News Agency article ("Ugandan AIDS Healer Pulls Crowds.").

According to the article, the government is trying to reorganize and improve AIDS management and monitoring programs. It also is trying to improve coordination of activities among AIDS organizations in the country, including Women and AIDS, and AIDS Orphans.
