Five Communities Oppose Smut Laws, But Four Approve

Voters in six Montana communities declared November 4, 1997, they didn't need stricter laws to protect their kids from smut, but citizens of four other towns approved initiatives taking a tougher stand.

Three Forks, Neihart, and Broadview overwhelmingly rejected anti-smut laws. Livingston, Polson, and Belt also turned thumbs down. But that opinion was not unanimous, with voters in Ronan, St. Ignatius, Clyde Park, and Manhattan approving similar anti-smut proposals.

The reception varied widely. Voters in Three Forks rejected the ordinance nearly by nearly a 4-to-1 margin, and two-thirds of voters in Neihart and Broadview opposed the law. About 60...
