The discounts will be phased in during the second quarter this year and will be fully in effect by June 30.
The company took the action after Tommy Thompson, secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), stated on Feb. 19 that nothing in the Medicare program rules or regulations prevents hospitals from providing discounts to uninsured and underinsured patients who cannot afford their hospital bills.
