Studies from C. Navarrete and colleagues yield new information about cord blood

Research findings, 'Cord blood banking: a historical perspective,' are discussed in a new report. According to recent research published in the British Journal of Haematology, "Umbilical cord blood (UCB) contains stem and progenitor cells capable of restoring haematopoietic and immunological function in vivo. UCB is currently used as an alternative source of haematopoietic stem cells for transplantation in patients suffering from haematological malignancies, bone marrow failures and inherited metabolic disorders."
