Study shows bipolar radiofrequency preserves healthy cartilage in the knee

New study data published in the Journal of Knee Surgery found the use of bipolar radiofrequency (bRF) - known as Coblation and developed by ArthroCare Corp. (ARTC) - precisely smoothed articular cartilage defects in the knee without damaging healthy tissue, and defects filled with a stable fibrocartilage cap in all four cases covered.

"The findings from this study demonstrate that radiofrequency successfully treats some cartilage defects in human knees without abrasion or microfracture," said Kenneth DeHaven, MD, one of the study's authors and professor and senior associate dean for clinical affairs at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
