Joint Replacements

New legislation will make hip, knee and shoulder joint replacements safer

Hip, knee and shoulder joint replacements have been reclassified so that they will now require a higher level of scrutiny by certification organisations, before they are placed on the UK market.

The European Commission has reclassified these joint replacement implants following an initial request from the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). For several years, the MHRA has been concerned about the performance of hip implants, which can lead to premature implant failure and early revision and replacement of the artificial joint.

Joint replacements have been reclassified from class IIb (medium risk) to class III (high risk)...
