Santa Monica Votes to Draft Ordinance On City-Wide Cat De-Claw Ban

In a 5-1 vote, Santa Monica City Council passed a motion Tuesday to draft an ordinance that restricts the practice of amputating the toes of animals, also known as "de-clawing." The motion was brought by City Council Members Kevin McKeown and Gleam Davis, who requested that the ordinance, if passed, be enacted prior to December 31, 2009, after which date local jurisdictions' authority in such matters will be usurped by SB 762, a pending state law limiting cities' rights to ban medical procedures they deem inhumane.
