"Atypical Mycobacterial Pulmonary Infections: Do Initial Smears Correlate with Cultures?."

According to an abstract presented by the authors to the 2nd National Conference on Human Retroviruses and Related Infections, held January 29 - February 2, 1995, in Washington, DC, "Object: Pulmonary mycobacterial infectious have increased in the HIV population over the past years. MTB and atypical mycobacterial infections are the causes. Initial AFB smears cannot be used to differentiate between the two until the results of the cultures are obtained, which can take six weeks. Methods: A retrospective review of all (+) cultures for mycobacteria were reviewed for 1992/93. Correlation was made between the initial AFB smears and their subsequent cultures. ...
