Most Kids with TB in NYC Are Foreign Born

The majority of children under five years of age with tuberculosis (TB) in New York City are from countries where TB is endemic, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report.

In 1993 there was a 5 percent overall decrease in TB cases in the United States, but cases among children continued to rise dramatically. During that year 1076 cases were reported in children younger than five years of age, a 60 percent increase over the 672 cases reported in 1987.

Seven states (Florida, California, Texas, New York, Georgia, Illinois and Pennsylvania) accounted for 45 percent of the pediatric TB cases, and two-thirds of the cases...
