SW Counties TB Effort Enhanced with New DOT Funding

Counties in southwestern Florida are facing an increase in TB - largely tied to migrant farm workers and recent immigrants from developing countries - bolstered by a recent influx of state and federal funding.

Health officials in Florida's Collier and Immokalee counties are hiring staff to supervise Directly Observed Therapy (DOT) and investigate new cases, according to newspaper reports in Naples.

Statewide there were 1,524 new cases diagnosed in 1993, the latest year for which complete statistics were available.
