Cedar Rapids Adopts Policy for At-Risk Employes

Cedar Rapids, Iowa, will be testing its police officers, firefighters and nurses annually for tuberculosis to comply with a mandate from the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), according to a city spokesperson.

Employee Safety and Health Director Lora Summerwill said 362 employees considered at highest risk for contracting TB will be covered by the new program.

Testing and protective equipment are expected to cost about $800 annually, Summerwill said. "We always like to keep ahead of the standards that are coming down," she said.
