Homeless, Healthcare Advocates Criticize Funding Cuts

Recent cuts in welfare benefits in Massachusetts, and proposals by Governor William Weld to change eligibility requirements for homeless assistance have caused alarm among advocates for the homeless, shelter workers and healthcare providers, according to recent reports in Amherst, Massachusetts.

Proposed changes in eligibility for emergency assistance would deny shelter to families who are homeless for any reason other than natural disaster, domestic violence or court-ordered eviction, reducing the number of homeless families eligible for help by about two-thirds, according to one estimate.
