Lax Testing, Follow-Up Blamed for TB Increase

Flawed and sometimes fraudulent testing and inconsistent treatment among immigrants are hurting efforts to slow the spread of tuberculosis (TB), according to a study recently released.

"We know exactly what to do, but with the procedures and laws there are now, we aren't able to do it," said Dr. Jeffrey Starke, a pediatrician and TB specialist at Baylor University in Houston, Texas.

Starke and Dr. Michael Iseman of the University of Colorado co-wrote the report in the April 20, 1995, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine that urges better screening and follow-up of immigrants exposed to the disease.
