Specific Risk Factors Associated with Extrapulmonary TB

Factors such as injecting drug use, prison record or residence in high TB-endemic areas are associated with extrapulmonary presentation in AIDS patients with tuberculosis.

In 1987 the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revised the AIDS surveillance case definition, adding several AIDS-defining diagnoses to the previous list, including extrapulmonary (EP) TB in HIV-infected individuals. However, pulmonary TB was not included until the introduction of the 1993 expanded AIDS definition.
