One in 50 London Homeless Has TB, UK Charity Reports

One in 50 homeless people in London, England, has active tuberculosis (TB), said a charity for "rough sleepers," a term used in the United Kingdom to describe the homeless.

The incidence "is as far as we are aware the highest prevalence of TB ever recorded among the homeless in the UK," said the nonprofit agency, Crisis.

The rate is 25 times higher than that of the London population indicated by mass X-ray screening in 1983, and 200 times the national rate.

Poor diet, damp living conditions, alcohol abuse and non-compliance with treatment schedules were blamed in a report by Dr. Ken Citron, a chest physician at the Royal Brompton...
